Pork shank mole. These people know how to cook. Falls off the bone. Great place. We keep going back. Love it! Erika and the staff are amazing! This is a hidden gem. This was our first time here and we had an incredible experience, from start to finish. The attentiveness of our waiter was unmatched, they have the friendliest staff, and everything we ate was so delicious, and presented beautifully. This is a small, cozy restaurant, that gets extremely busy, so reservations are highly recommended. Also BYOB for a very small fee. Street parking is available. I am 51 years old, and today I've had the best chicken breast of my life. Yes, I've been to this neighborhood gem before, but I need to share this today. Generally, amazing food, great patio space and thank goodness for BYOB. Tonight this place was elevated to another level, and despite the fear of losing the ability to walk to my local spot and not worry about making a reservation a month in advance I feel like it's my duty to let the universe know: the food here is exceptional and absolutely worth the visit. If tonight's special by the sous chef is an indication of what's to come; make a reservation now. I've had nothing that was not delicious at this restaurant, and the biweekly specials are a delightful surprise too. The food and atmosphere are sublime, but they don't compare to the amazingly hospitable service. It's like entering a comfortable, unfussy oasis where you can push the world away for a hour or so. Erika, Rogelio, and the crew have set the bar so high with their genuine excitement and commitment to making their guests feel welcome. Did I mention it's BYOB? They have appropriate glassware and accoutrements for whatever you are drinking. I've literally NEVER seen the level of service for BYOB in all my life. And now they are offering homemade margarita mixes with all the fixins (24 hour advance notice so they are fresh, fresh, SO fresh). I am very picky about my margaritas (usually too sweet) and damn, these are delicious! After experiencing many award winning restaurants and bars in Chicago and beyond (Michelin starred, James Beard, etc): El Xangarrito surpasses them on ALL counts. And they accomplish all of this while cranking out orders for a ROBUST take-out demand at the same time. La Familia del Xangarrito: ¡Uds. son el mejor! Writing my second updated review after visiting today. Started with the mini flautas again which was delicious. This time we ordered camarones a la vera and pacific salmon. Shrimp in the camarones a la vera was fresh and chile serrano was seasoned just right. Roll it up in the complimentary tortillas and everything pairs beautifully. Pacific salmon was cooked nicely and the sauce was very well balanced. The sauce had a crescendo effect in flavors as it kept growing on me after each bite. It was tasty, unique and addicting. Although the food was excellent, we had to wait close to 40 minutes this time for our mains to come out. I know it is getting more popular by the day but it was a little unexpected. Another amazing dinner at El Xangarrito. Can't wait to visit again to try something new. First Review Unfortunately after the first dishes came out, I forgot to take pictures of my steak because I was too busy eating. The chef here is really doing something magical here. Even the simple appetizers are full of flavors, fresh, with the perfect temperature. My steak was perfectly cooked. The staff makes you feel very comfortable and you will fall in love with the place. El Xangarrito is the best Mexican food in Chicago. Erika is the most gracious host and Chef Rogelio knocks all the dishes out of the park. We’ve been here many times now and every time we are surprised with how good the food is. The Enchiladas Morita (shrimp) are so unique and delicious. A perfect harmony of flavors and textures. If it’s on the menu, you need to get these. I come most often for the Asada Tacos which have ruined all other Tacos for me. I’m always disappointed if I go elsewhere. And that just sums this place up - you’ll end up comparing all Mexican food to El Xangarrito because it sets the bar so high. You have to come here - it’s incredible. Everything was delicious and the service was wonderful! Surpassed every expectation we had. The enchiladas morita are a must try!! We are already making plans to return. Erika is such a wonderful host! So attentive and making sure we enjoyed our evening. You can tell the dedication and care put into their restaurant. Can't wait to visit again! This will be our new go to for a nice dinner. The staff is amazing! The restaurant is cozy and inviting. The food was the show stopper! Absolutely hands down delicious!!!! We all sampled each others dish. They were all equally amazing. The mole was one of the best I’ve ever had. BYOB - thank you for an amazing evening. I ordered the shrimp and I loved that the shell was removed. They also hosted a larger party with no problem. All of our food came at the same time and was hot. We will be back!

This place was so good that I wish I could give them 6 stars. I grew up in Mexican neighborhoods eating Mex food and this is some of the best I've had. Prices seemed a little steep at first but the plates are pretty big. I have the steak with enchiladas, guac, plantains and salad. Everything was fresh and prepared excellently. I wish I could buy bottles of their salsa and enchilada sauce. They are byob so stop by Gene's on the way there for some wine.
