Edited 3/9/24 Black Bear had us back for 4 comped meals and I don't know if they had a different person cooking but the food was fantastic! We ordered the same meals we had previously and this time they were made perfectly. My mother in laws steak was cooked correctly this time and had the correct dressing on it. The baked potatoes were soft and delicious with plenty of butter and sour cream. And the veggies were tender like they should be. Thank you for fixing our complaint. We will definitely be back. Went for dinner last night with my husband, mother in law and daughter. Came out from Watsonville which was a waste. Us 3 adults ordered the 10 oz flank steak (?) special. The waitress asked how we wanted it cooked. My mother in law does NOT like her meat rare so she asked for WELL DONE. My hubby and I wanted medium rare. They also ordered a baked potato with the entree. The waitress came over to let us know she put our order to cook but that she had them "do all the steaks the same"... I was worried about mine being overcooked but I should have been more concerned about how raw my mother in laws was. So bloody she said it was still mooing and only ate 2 bites. The baked potato was so NOT baked it was hard and inedible. I asked if they did cheesy broccoli but instead of just saying no it wasn't an option, the put shredded cheese on the top and I'm guessing microwaved it. Either way, it was not a pleasant meal. Not every Black Bear Diner is equal, but this one had excellent food! The service was less than stellar, but that appeared to just the individual we got that day. Most of the time, the service is also really good. For the amount of food you get on the plate, the prices are quite good. If you've never tried Black Bear before, this should be a good experience. Honestly I was confused on the menu, but its alright because the food was worth it. Our server was very kind and fast. Waffles were amazing. Service was efficient and wonderful. This chain is one of our favorites. When you sign up for the rewards, you get a free breakfast just for signing up and then another one on your birthday. The food is typically tasty and with good portion size. The decor is consistent throughout the chain, and the music from the jukebox is varied and upbeat.
