The staff was great. The portions are more than generous. The happy hour is one of the best values on the island. I ate my food before I was able to take a picture of the meal. However, I was able to capture my dessert. The fried ice cream was delicious. I highly recommend this place. The outside of the restaurant is unassuming but a pleasant surprise inside. It looked like a bar but is a family friendly resturant.

My experience at Coco Cantina in Hilo was amazing! It was our first time trying it, because the Mexican restaurant we usually go to was closed. I’m so glad we did! The food was amazing, our waitress was so kind and friendly, her service was outstanding! Both of my kids liked their food (which is rare). The atmosphere was calm and the restaurant was clean. I ordered the shrimp and chorizo burrito, and my fiancé ordered the catch of the day tacos. Everything was so fresh and delicious! Great drink menu as well.

Not gonna lie, I was a little nervous to try Mexican food in Hawaii. We live in Oklahoma and live on Mexican food so I was a little skeptical. Let me tell you, this place did not disappoint! In fact, I would rank this burrito as one of the top burritos I’ve ever had! Absolutely delicious! Fantastic food made better by our awesome waitress Janelle. She was so friendly and attentive to our needs. I would recommend asking for her if you eat here. 6 stars!!!

Christina is an amazing artist and server! She helped me feel right at home and gave me full confidence in her bartending as we discussed Jamaica because they didn’t have it available and an awesome recipe she had for a cocktail. I was able to relax and just enjoy the ambience with other guests. Awesome first dine-in experience for me!!! Five stars ⭐️ for sure! So thoughtful and attentive. Beautiful mojito! The ceviche was great with both fish and shrimp… perfect amount of lime to cook and accent the peppers and mango… the fish, a little fishy for my preference to the taste, yet I prefer other seafood besides fish usually. I loved it! Thin-cut delicious cantina style chips… perfection!
We were greeted with warm, fresh tortilla chips and salsa as soon as we took our seats. The service was more than excellent. Food was also surprisingly delicious. Posole was superb, my only gripe was the size of the tiny bowl received for $7. Chicken on the chicken Caesar salad was yummy and nicely spiced. Salad was pretty heavily dressed, which could be too wet, but overall still a very enjoyable meal. Fiancé had a massive chorizo shrimp and steak burrito, very good!

Excellent food and service! We were there the second night they were in business and first night they were accepting new customers after their grand opening the night before. Beef fajitas were outstanding. We are both from Houston Texas and believe me we know about fajitas! These were very tender and very flavorful. Also the quantity is amazing. Filled us both up and then some. Barely room for dessert afterward but the fried ice cream was definitely worth it 😋
I had intended to give them 4 stars, but as I was writing this review I started to have an allergic reaction (I have a severe dairy allergy) and had to take some Benadryl. To their credit, our waitress took careful notes on my allergy. I’m guessing it was some sort of cross-contamination with the fryer oil, or some small amount of butter in something.
I ordered the carne asada protein bowl and some sort of rum cocktail, and my friend got the carne asada burrito.
The pros: a lovely design + interior, personable service, excellent fresh chips and good salsa, a diverse bar menu with local drink options, and some innovative cocktails.
The cons: the food, as my friend said, was serviceable, but tasted like store-bought foods combined on a plate. That’s not bad, per-say, but it wasn’t striking, either. We were asked how we wanted our carne asada cooked and said medium rare, and yet the meat came out in small, well done steak-um-like shreds…again, not a problem per-say, but I thought it odd to ask about done-ness.
Overall: Friendly service and the atmosphere were big pros! The carne asada was ok, the beans were good, the lettuce tasted bagged but serviceable, and the guac, pico de gallo, and the Mexican rice were pretty standard. I think this place has a lot of potential, but I think they would benefit from using more local ingredients, less ice in the mixed drinks (to prevent watering down; maybe use smaller glasses?) and I wish I hadn’t had an allergic reaction. My friend will certainly be back to try more; given that I’m not feeling well, I might just stick to the drinks next time.
