We went to Fat Hen pre-covid and they offered a wonderful four course meal. I decided to revisit for a special occasion. The doors were locked at 5:06 despite our reservation at 5 pm. Odd. We signed up for the chef’s experience, which over the phone was mentioned as a way for the chef to offer dishes they were experimenting with as extras. There was nothing offered during our experience that was extra and nothing made mention of the fact that it was the chef’s experience. No chef came to speak to us. The beet salad was a pile of beets and dressed, Mediterranean style greens. It lacked brightness due to lack of acid and the plating could be improved. There was no additional herbs or garnish. Just pistachios, beets, greens and goat cheese. The flavors were very muddied. We received a bucatini carbonara that I had been looking forward too. It was extremely salty. My husband remarked that it was like a can of concentrated campbell’s soup. The pasta was not cooked enough, even by al dente standards. When we mentioned it to the server she said that since we already ate so much of it she wasn’t gonna do anything abt it. But there wasn’t even an apology or discount. The steak was alright. But there was a large pat of anchovy butter on top that was rock solid- a pat of butter 3 inches wide and half inch tall which was very large - usually maitre’d butter is softened but this looked like it was straight from the freezer. It was very tough to spread and also made the steak taste worse. They also forgot to put the uni on top until I flagged that it was missing. There was also a small bristle I found… like something off of a brush. Overall one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in a while. Not sure what happened to this restaurant. Would not recommend. Such a wonderful restaurant and the food and the wine was amazing. There are very few upscale less traditional Italian restaurants in and around Boston but this will now enter the rotation of places I will go regularly. The pastas were amazing and the service was beyond impeccable. I recommend the chefs course, which was a small dish provided by the chef made uniquely that day. Overall an amazing experience and will definitely be back again! Service Dine in Meal type Dinner Price per person $30–50 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

My husband and I have been to Fat Hen twice (even years apart) and had a fantastic experience both times with delicious meals and superb, personalized service. I recommend the “Chefs Table” experience which comes with an off menu dish selected by the chef. We had mussels and pasta - perfection. Highly recommend. Really nice place to eat. The octopus starter was good but the burrata crostini was a bit smoky. The gnocchi was very good and we liked the actual pasta a lot, the sauce on the pasta course was good but not great. Our favorite part of the meal was the entrees. The bass was excellent and was served over an awesome pea salad dish. The steak was also fabulous and came with these amazing fried potato gratin cube things, they were really awesome. We got two desserts, blackberry panna Cotta was not good. The actual panna cotta was bland and completely overwhelmed by a champagne topping. The white chocolate semifredo with strawberry gelato was incredible!!!! One of the best desserts I’ve had in a long time. Really great service and all around really nice experience.

I had read good reviews about this restaurant and was excited to try it. We ordered the cacio e Pepe angel hair pasta and the wild mushroom gemelli to go. Each dish was 24-26$. The servings were tiny to the extent where it seemed like they had given us someone’s leftover. We ended up getting food from another restaurant afterwards. The pastas were dry and had no flavor at all. We were so disappointed. This was a rip off. I don’t know if dining in would have been a better experience, but I otherwise do not recommend this place. What an absolute neighborhood gem. Wonderful space/ambience. Staff is over the top with courtesy and knowledge. Food was timed perfectly despite being there on a Saturday at peak time. The kitchen had it all under control and the servers made sure everything got where it was going on time. Speaking of the food...WOW....such a unique menu and very blatantly designed by a chef with years of education and experience. Each dish was a combination of opposing flavors which came together to create a perfect harmony. You don't create these type of dishes by chance...there is some serious skill in the kitchen at Fat Hen. Wine list was superb, signature cocktails looked amazing but the wine list honestly spoke to clearly to my heart that I had to opt for a paired four course dinner. I was not disappointed. Rib eye and the scallop crudo stood out, but it was all simply decadent. 10/10 will be back.

Our server Sarah provided five star service, was knowledgeable about the menu, wine selection, and was able to make great recommendations. We had the prime rib and short rib, both were delicious! Service Dine in Meal type Dinner Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

This place is kind of meh to be honest. It's not bad but it isn't great. I had the bolognese and it tasted more like taco chili and my date had the wild mushroom linguine which was actually quite good. The atmosphere was a bit odd being it just feels like an extension of La Brassa. You have to cut through the much larger sister restaurant to find the restroom. The one big question I had was why is the place called fat hen and has a logo font that looks like a waffle pattern but this is a fine Italian place with I think only one chicken dish. It made me think this place was supposed to be a chicken and waffle joint and they changed their mind on the product last minute. Food: 3 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 2
With the name Fat Hen, you'd expect to find the menu dominated by fowl, but this place only serves the most mundane dishes you'd expect in an Italian restaurant. At 5pm, my date and I were the only customers and remained so for the hour plus we were there. The tableware were smeared and greasy, the walls were scored and marked up, and the overloud ambience music could have been assembled by a 17 year old in the year 1993. We had the wild mushrooom gemelli and the bolognese. The gemelli was very mushroomy, and that is really all that can be said about it. It was essentially a handful of what must be VERY expensive mushrooms added to some high class macaroni and cheese. The bolognese was truly disappointing, tasting predominately of taco-seasoning and with a tooth not unlike the meat used at Taco Bell. Both pasta dishes were smaller than you'd find at any true self-respecting Italian joint, and both were easily composed of ingredients costing in total less than 1/30th the cost of the dish. Don't bother. Food: 2 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 1
