Proof that restaurant owners are spending far too much time and attention on the decor of an establishment rather than putting decent effort into training their kitchen staff and waiters properly. The atmosphere is such a welcome respite in this beautiful town. The time it takes to receive your coffee and food however, leaves a dismal taste in your mouth when you consider the prices. While we did not expect fast food, there is absolutely no reason why two omlettes should take over an hour without them ever having arrived. The food here is shocking. Then, we ordered an extra patty and they charged us R75 PER patty! That is insane... Not only that, the patty was stated to be beef, but did not look or taste like it, so we didn't even eat it. Food: 1 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4

Service was very slow despite being virtually empty. Eventually ordered eggs benedict which came on a rosti cooked in old oil and a mound of mashed up spinach with the life cooked out of it. Hollandaise sauce was... weird - thin, wrong colour, meagre and compensated for by a blob of mayo on top. Genuinely the worst eggs benedict I've ever had. Toilets grotty, with the sort of accumulated grime that mirrors the general impression I have of the place. The coffee was good. Our Yard in Graaff-Reinet is conveniently located next to the main road en-route to the coast. Graaff-Reinet is one of my favourite stop overs when I travel from Gauteng to Stilbaai because of the many well preserved historical buildings. The town transports one to a period when the area was first occupied by our ancestors. It displays artefacts of the establishment of Western culture. Our Yard beautifully fits into this setting by displaying modern artwork in many different styles. Great coffee, wine and food simply makes one want to linger. It was our 3rd visit and it was extremely busy when we popped in for breakfast on our way back from holiday. Still great food and atmosphere. In the busy-ness we forgot our guidedog's treat bag hanging over the chair. Called them 2 days later and it was just no issue for them to arrange to get it delivered to Gauteng. Quaint little place with an interesting menu. What spoiled it for us on two separate visits was the poor service. We were seated promptly however that was where the service stopped. Coffee was poor and our meal order had to be cancelled eventually after 70min of waiting. Zero attention from our argumentative waiter and even less from who assume was the owner/manageress.
