I went today on taco Tuesday and I won’t go back. I ordered 6 beef tacos rice beans and a California burrito. The California burrito, rice, and bean were good. But I got the tacos and the meat taste weird, there is barely any meat on the tacos, barley any cheese, No tomatoes. It was basically lettuce. I use to go to Rivas a lot and now it’s so different. Friendly service and inexpensive Mexican food. All large menu features many choices. Combo plates come with generous portions of rice and refried beans. We also ordered chips and guacamole and that came prepared like nachos with cheese and guacamole on top of warm chips. Drive thru available along with indoor dining area. I always use the drive thru. Since they have a new gentleman operating the window it's been an easier ordering experience. As of the past 6 mo or so the huevos rancho breakfast platter has been great just like my husband likes it with the corn tortillas under the veggie mixture and eggs. We have always said we liked going there, but it was hit or miss, but as of late it's been great. Ordered three things and don't make any changes but didn't get anything I ordered. I was also the only one in there at 645 on a Saturday night. Honestly sound call the health inspector after watching them take orders and touching money then going back to cook with no gloves or hand washing.... Don't waste you time or money. Rivas is always a hit or miss, they're either really good, or really nasty. I guess it depends who the cook is. Same with the drinks too, sometimes the Horchata can be made perfectly, or sometimes it's watery, you taste more water than horchata. A close friend of ours threw a birthday party for his wife and the original catering company never showed up. In a panic we started calling around to see if any Mexican restaurant would be willing to save us and help us feed 40 hungry people. The owner of Rivas accepted the challenge and asked for an hour to get it all done. When we arrived to pick up the food we were shocked to see ONE man in the kitchen cooking up an absolute storm. His nephew was working the front counter but this man made all of our food in under an hour by himself. It was absolutely incredible to watch. We had three trays full of meat, a tray of beans, a tray of rice, fresh tortillas, multiple containers of salsa, sour cream, guacamole, and any other toppings you could imagine. He was so gracious and kind and we thanked him profusely for saving the party. The food was delicious and everyone was so impressed at how well it turned out. Rivas will always have my business now. Overall had a good experience. Had the carne asada fries; the carne asada was flavorful, but the thick cut fries drowned out the flavor a bit. I wouldn’t say they’re the best in the Surprise area, but the food certainly wasn’t bad. The interior is very well kept with welcoming decor and the salsa bar is clean. RIPOFF! Burnt rolled tacos, charged for additional beans and rice on the side that wasn't put in my bag, rice is hard. Caritas burrito was bland. Go to other places if you want quick Mexican food that's good.
