We thought of this place as a hidden gem. Tucked down a side street, at first we thought it was closed till we were greeted with twinkling lights in the darkness, and a warm welcome. The place is beautiful, woven coconut leaves above, smooth wood twist furniture, funky lights and splashes of colour - you just know when you are surrounded by someone’s passion and creativity. The food was just fabulous - everything we ordered was good, so much so that we ordered some more to takeaway! Uprising felt friendly kind warm - like home but with better food. Definitely worth a visit.

The food is amazing! The rice and curry is the best we had in Sri Lanka. They always make different types of currys so it never gets boring. I can also recommend the vegetable soup.
The owners are super lovely and we always have a nice chat.
In this restaurant you feel very connected to nature.
Definitely come by if you are in SK Town!

Probably the best dinner and conversation with a local we had on our trip. We had the fried garlic as a starter (so good!), fried rice, fried noodles and coconut rotti with banana. Food is super fresh and delicious. Therefore takes a while to get prepared which was no problem at all because we had a very good conversation with the father of the cook. Was so interesting to hear his perspective on so many things. Really inspiring and also funny. Just an amazing experience.

I first came here four years ago and the meal was unforgettable. This time we ordered the large fish and it was delicious! The whole family joins in to make everything from scratch. If you get the fish like us, place the order early because they go to the market to see what’s fresh. Another table got the curry and it smelled wonderful. The owner made everyone feel at home and talked with us in depth about Sri Lanka. I can’t wait to go back.

We stayed in Hiriketiya, but travelled to Matara to get away from the crowds and enjoy some surfing at SK Town, and randomly stumbled upon this place; and what a beautiful coincidence! - Hands down the best coconut roti we’ve had during our trip in Sri Lanka; it was hot when served, and smelled of amazing coconut. And the chili chutney is soooo good (the dhall too)! The chef even served us their super tasty tomato curry (complimentary). We’ve been here twice now, and will surely come back if we’re in Matara. If anyone’s really serious about Sri Lankan food, this is the place to stop by for proper home-cooked meal packed with lots of love. Thank you, Uprising 🇱🇰🇯🇲❤️
(Bonus point for having the cutest little puppy also)

After visiting with a friend in 2020 I was so happy to return to Uprising this year. Absolutely delicious & super fresh food, everything is made from scratch. The coconut roti with vegetables was so delicious! Really lovely family that run this place, definitely recommend stopping by if you are in the area!

It was pouring rain, so we went to the nearest place to have lunch. So glad we came here, cozy place and delicious food, i had garlic soup, which was very flavourful and chicken-garlic curry, i’d say one of the best i’ve had in sri lanka.
If you don’t come here for food you are missing out!!!!
Lovely setting and the best freshly prepared home cooked meal I have had in Sri Lanka so far so you may need to wait a little longer for food.
We watched them grind a coconut for our dish & pick the curry leaves from the tree, That’s how fresh the meals are!
The photos do not do this food justice but I couldn’t wait to eat this delicious smelling food any longer! 😋
Honestly it’s amazing here!!!!!!
We went there for Dinner on a Friday night. Loved the vibe of the place and the staff were super helpful. We ordered a chicken sandwich and a mixed fried rice. Both dishes were tasty and portions were enough. They welcome locals as well. We don’t mind going there again.

Food was soaked in coconut oil which smells horrible. Service was slow and prices were high (European prices). Almost felt like a tourist trap. Other than that it was fine. Try switching the coconut oil for regular sunflower or soya, it will be much better. Also if you wanna keep your prices higher step up the service (by a lot).
